J. D. Cottman Passed Away At His

Home on South Seneca Street.—

Resided Here 30 Years.



  J. D. Cottman, 76 years of age, died yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock, while resting from a walk, at his home 337 South Seneca.  He had been failing in health for the past six years.

  Mr. Cottman had been a resident of Wichita for more than thirty years.  He was one of the fist grocerymen in the city.  His son, Harry, has had charge of the business for the past eighteen years.  He owned several business blocks on Douglas Avenue in addition to other city property.

  He was born April 17, 1841, in Owen County, Indiana.  He married Miss M. J. Boord in Paris, Ill., November 25, 1868.  Five children were born, three of whom are living.  They are:  Harry Cottman, 808 Maple Street; Judd Cottman, Perkins, Ok., and Mrs. Roy Kennell, 335 South Seneca.  A sister, Mrs. W. C. Rafferty, 419 North Waco, survives him.  His wife died February 2, 1882.  He later married Miss E. S. Sapp, of Terre Haute, Ind.  One son was born, who died in infancy.  Mr. Cottman moved to Kansas in 1886, and he had lived in Wichita most of the time since.

  The body will lie in state at the residence Sunday afternoon from 2 o’clock till 5 o’clock.

  He was a member of the Garfield Post No. 25, G. A. R., having enlisted in Company C, Eleventh Indiana Infantry in February, 1865.  His pallbearers will be veterans.

  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o’clock Monday morning at the Trinity Methodist Church, of which he was an active member.
