History of Ford County Schools - offsite link
The early history of the county is rich in western history. From the early traders who traveled the Santa Fe Trail, to the buffalo hunters, and the gunfighters, each group added "spice" to the history of Dodge City and Ford County. Ford County was organized in 1873 from unorganized territory.
Following the Santa Fe Trail, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad worked its way toward Santa Fe and the west coast. The arrival of the railroad provided a new avenue for settlers to journey to this western Kansas community.
This gen web site is being sponsored to assist those researching Ford County families. Researchers should be aware that the Kansas Genealogical Society and the Ford County Historical Society should also be consulted for further information. The Heritage Server should also be consulted for further information.
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web pages, This project has been expanded from Kentucky to all areas of the United States. Construction of web pages for Kansas began in June 1996.
