From various areas of Sweden, they emigrated to America and their final destination was to be Kansas. We have people in Sweden who are searching for ancestors that they have lost contact with. We would invite you to take a look at this page to see if any of the names are familiar to you or someone you know. If you feel you have any information or search suggestions, please contact me.E-Mail Pat Adams Return to The Swedish Connection Home Page

The data was gathered by Myriam Edholt (located in Sweden) in an attempt to trace living relatives of ancestors with whom contact was lost. She tells us that "Svartnäs is part of the parish of Svärdsjö, but has its own chapel. I cannot give you the name of the ship from Liverpool to USA, only the name of the ship between Svartnäs and England. The relatives of the emigrants from Svartnäs may be difficult to trace because Svartnäs was an ironwork and when it closed down, many people left the village. In some cases we have to go to the Emigrant Institut at Växsjö. Emigrants began to leave Svärdsjö in 1868. The destination was Kansas, but I don't know if they stayed in Kansas."

Note from Patricia Adams: It is often difficult to trace our Swedish ancestors due to their naming practice and ours. In Sweden you were the son or daughter of your father. If the father's first name Anders (our version of Andrew), the son's last name was Andersson and the daughter's last name was Andersdotter. The woman did not necessarily change her last name upon marriage. When they emigrated to America and their papers were processed here, name spellings got changed: perhaps the official here filling out the papers could not read, write or spell in Swedish, or the emigrant could not speak English, or perhaps they just wanted to "fit in" in their new land. In many cases, Andersson became Anderson, Abrahamsson became Abrahams or Abraham, Danielsson became Daniels, Johnsson became Johnson, Petersson became Peterson or Peters and so on. Some cases (such as my great grandfather - Anders Andersson) were much more difficult for an American like me, with no education in another language, to find. My great grandfather was born Anders Andersson in Bollnas, Sweden. He changed his name to Andrew and took the last name of Broden, which was the last name of a man he respected in Bollnas. If not for the gracious help of Sven-Erik Sundqvist (Chairman of the Bollnas, Sweden Genealogical Society.
